香港早期的粤语来自广州，二十世纪中期以后逐步与广州话分道扬镳。本书选辑张洪年教授的语言学文章，描述早期粤语的各种语言现象，解释香港粤语在200年间的种种变化。其它相关书籍有《广州语本字》。

The early Cantonese in Hong Kong originated from Guangzhou, and gradually differentiated from Cantonese after the mid-20th century. This book is a selection of the linguistic articles by Professor Samuel Hung-nin Cheung. It describes the linguistic phenomena in early Cantonese, and explains the metamorphoses of Guangzhou Cantonese into Hong Kong dialect over the past 200 years.

作者简介Author Introduction

张洪年，香港中文大学中国语言及文学系、加州大学柏克莱分校荣休教授，着有港中大出版社的《香港粤语语法的研究》（1972 年初版，2007年增订版）、《一切从语言开始》（2017）等。

Samuel Hung-nin Cheung is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of The Chinese University of Hong Kong as well as at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also the author of Research on Hong Kong Cantonese Syntax (first edition in 1972, revised edition in 2007 and Everything starts with language (2017), which are published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press.
